Abstract

This paper offers a reconstruction of the linguistic notion known as ‘recursion’ as presented in the initial texts of Generative Grammar. Within the framework of Standard Theory, ‘recursion’ is considered to be a characteristic operation of grammar, which enables the linguist to account for the infinity of sentences generated by it, and the finitude that such mechanism possesses. However, there has been some difficulties to define this concept and a lack of referential agreement around it. Through a revision of the founding texts, the aim is to show the descriptive scope that has been attributed to the term. Additionally, our purpose is to specify what kind of grammatical operations are attributed to this notion and what type of linguistic phenomena those operations generate.
